Living
Meet Fred & Liz
Fred and Liz Welfel have been Fearrington residents since June of 2016. We asked them what they loved most about living at Fearrington – here’s what they shared about their experience.
What persuaded you to move to Fearrington?
When we decided to escape the cold and cloudy weather in Cleveland we generated a list of criteria for our warm weather home: a friendly and lively community of interesting folk, access to universities and cultural events, excellent medical care, a liberal church, and a reasonably sized airport nearby. The research triangle was the only area that fit the bill. We also hoped for a home in a community with lots of others in our age cohort, but we didn’t really want a place restricted to those over age 55. Fearrington was the only place that met all these requirements. And it had the most wonderful independent bookstore within walking distance and all these beautiful hardwood forests.
What about the Bushcreek neighborhood appealed to you when deciding between Fearrington’s neighborhoods?
The best way to describe our attraction to Bushcreek is the “Goldilocks principle”: we wanted a one-level home that was neither too small or too big, neighbors that were close, but not too close, and a street that was quiet, but not too removed from the center and the walking trails. Bushcreek had all of these attributes, but we should point out that we also found several other neighborhoods attractive as well.
What do you love most about Fearrington?
Our first reaction to this question is how difficult it is to choose just one thing. If pressed we would choose the people and their commitment to making this place a true community. We have made so many wonderful friendships here that it is hard to believe we have lived here only briefly. We have busier social calendars than we have had in years but it isn’t the quantity of these connections here that stands out – it is their quality. We know that we can count on our friends and neighbors for advice, support, laughter, stimulating conversation and more.
What is one of your fond memories of living at Fearrington?
We have had many fun evenings at Roost, Fearrington’s outdoor beer garden, listening to live music with friends, pizza, and wine. We have equally fond memories of the people we met when we came to explore Fearrington for the first time. One couple we accosted in the Village to get an uncensored view of life here not only shared their very positive experience in Fearrington at length but also sent regular emails to check in on our progress with the move. Then after our arrival, they invited us for dinner, wine, and other activities. They have since become cherished friends.
