Saturday, September 26th at 11am, McIntyre's welcomes Dr. Timothy Tyson and Mary D. Williams to discuss their biography, Mahalia Jackson: Moving on Up a Little Higher. If Americans today still recognize the name Mahalia Jackson, they might recall that she was perhaps the greatest gospel singer who ever lived. But for many people, there is no awareness at all, not even for an entertainer whose “Move On Up a Little Higher” sold eight million copies, who headlined two Newport Jazz Festivals and performed before four United States presidents. While this rich musical legacy is admired by those in the know, virtually no one recognizes Jackson’s astonishing role in American civil rights history. We will be in the bookstore for this event, so if you are considering attending-- we are encouraging attendees to purchase the book prior to 9/25. For every book purchased, we will hold 2 seats in the front of the event space.
Then Sunday, September 27th at 2pm, our penultimate poetry reading for the year that McIntyre's cosponsors with the NC Poetry Society features Joey Lew, Earl Carlton Huband, Maura High, and Lee Stockdale!
Also, our Sponsor a Classroom fundraiser is still happening! McIntyre's is bringing award-winning authors to rural Chatham County schools this fall with the help of community donations in partnership with Chatham Reads. Donations go to supporting students and teachers in our community by making sure every child has a book. One of the authors, Derrick Barnes, will also be at McIntyre's for an event on Wednesday, September 30 at 6pm to share his latest book Who Got Game? Football. We are so excited to welcome him to the store!
Thursday, October 1st at 7pm, we are hosting a benefit and reading for Blair Publisher(a nonprofit publisher based in Durham). We are celebrating the return of New Stories from the South.This anthology revives the iconic annual story collection,New Stories from the South, gathering outstanding short stories written by Southern writers or about the Southern U.S. Stories were nominated by editors of literary journals and magazines, publishers of short story collections, and by prominent Southern writers who served as contributing editors for this volume. The event will be emceed by Daniel Wallace and will featureguest editor Susan Gregg Gilmore and authors Joanna Pearson, Jody Hobbs Hesler, Catherine Niolet, Tony Earley, Dean Marshall Tuck and Blair Publishing editor Lynn York. Our Fforde Ffocus event celebrating the Thursday Next series is shaping up to be such an exciting event.Purchasers of tickets hailing from Canada, Nebraska, Illinois, California, Texas and other far flung locales will convene in Pittsboro for an afternoon of fun. And finally, some great Village Center news. The Fearrington House Inn was just awarded a Michelin Key (like their stars for restaurants, but keys are awarded for lodging).
