Looking for books to start stocking your vacation reading pile? Then come join us thisSaturday at 11am as McIntyre's welcomes Amin Ahmad,A Killer in the Family, and Sujata Massey,The Star from Calcutta:A Mystery of 1920s India in an event we are calling Blood, Bodies, and Bollywood. Amin currently teaches creative writing at Duke University. He worked as an architect for many years before turning his talents to writing. An intoxicating drama set in the world of New York City’s elite, A Killer in the Family explores the underside of the American dream and asks, what happens when you marry into a family that keeps secrets? The Guardian declares it “a propulsive thriller with an enjoyable side order of social satire.”
The Star from Calcutta is the fifth instalment of the Perveen Mistry series, which has won Agatha, Macavity and Mary Higgins Clark Awards. Perveen is the only female lawyer in 1920s Calcutta. A movie censor murdered, a leading lady vanished—the glamour, romance, and intrigue of the beginnings of Bollywood come to vivid life in the thrilling new installment of the Perveen Mistry historical mystery series. “Massey brings the glittering decadence of the 1920s film world to the social restrictions of India under British rule... A wonderful history-mystery read, filled with fascinating details both of the complexity of life in British India and of the workings of the 1920s film world.” —Booklist, Starred Review

“A bittersweet triumph. . . . Phillips’s new book is rich with evocative descriptions of her hometown. . . . Her love and respect for the people and their pasts, and for the splendor of the landscape, gives the writing at times the feel of a meditation, one that is ideally served by the eloquence and precision of the author’s prose. . . . One of the finest descriptions I have read of how a fiction writer’s mind works.” —Sigrid Nunez, New York Times Book Review
