New York Times bestselling author Wiley Cash handpicks contemporary books by fellow North Carolinian authors and those writing books set in the state, encouraging readers to join in the fun. Wiley reviews each book in both the print and digital versions of the magazine and produces two podcast episodes highlighting the selected book and author.

Wiley Cash is an award-winning and New York Times bestselling author of four novels and the founder of This Is Working. He has published widely on issues ranging from the environment to music, and he is the host of the Our State Book Club podcast. He teaches fiction writing at UNC-Asheville and lives in North Carolina with his wife, photographer Mallory Cash, and their daughters.
▼CLYDE EDGERTON
Clyde Edgerton is the author of ten novels, a book of advice, a memoir, short stories, and essays. He has been a Guggenheim Fellow and five of his novels have been New York Times Notable Books. He is a member of the Fellowship of Southern Writers and is the Thomas S. Kenan III Distinguished Professor of Creative Writing at UNC Wilmington. He lives in Wilmington, NC, with his wife, Kristina, and their children.
▼BLAND SIMPSON
Bland Simpson is Kenan Distinguished Professor of English & Creative Writing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and he has also been The Red Clay Ramblers’ piano player since 1986. His books include The Great Dismal, The Mystery of Beautiful Nell Cropsey, Ghost Ship of Diamond Shoals, The Coasts of Carolina, and North Carolina: Land of Water, Land of Sky, and his theatrical collaborations include Diamond Studs, King Mackerel & The Blues Are Running, Kudzu and Fool Moon. Simpson’s awards include the North Carolina Award for Fine Arts (2005), the N.C. Humanities Council’s John Tyler Caldwell Award in the Humanities (2017), the UNC Chapel Hill Edward Kidder Graham Faculty Service Award (2018), and induction into the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame (2020). On April 24th, 2025, the UNC College of Arts & Sciences gave Simpson the William F. Little Award for Faculty Service.
