Gianni Zonin, heir to a family wine enterprise established in 1821 in the Italian Veneto region, acquired this Virginia plantation in 1976 with the seemingly ridiculous dream of creating a vineyard on land the local officials thought best suited to growing tobacco.
In 2006, celebrating the winery’s 30th anniversary as “setting the standard” for a region now populated by more than 200 wineries, Gianni and Silvana Zonin opened a barrel aging room for their premium red blend, Octagon, as the crowning achievement of their efforts.
Fast forward to 2023, Barboursville Vineyards’ Reserve Fiano and Sauvignon Blanc took home not just gold, but double gold at the San Francisco Wine Competition. Wine maker Luca Paschina says this is a win for all Virginia vineyards.
