Tucked between the rolling countryside of Pittsboro and Chapel Hill, Fearrington Village is known for its pastoral charm and iconic black-and-white Belted Galloway cow; but did you know we also have black and white Tennessee Fainting Goats?!
A Barnyard Favorite with a Quirky Twist
The Tennessee Fainting Goat is easily one of the most recognizable (and entertaining) residents at Fearrington. With their black-and-white coats and expressive personalities, they’re often seen grazing alongside the village’s famous “Oreo cows.” But what truly sets them apart is their unusual reaction to surprise.
Despite their name, these goats don’t actually faint. Instead, they have a harmless genetic condition called myotonia congenita, which causes their muscles to stiffen briefly when startled. This can make them appear to freeze or topple over for a few seconds before quickly bouncing back up—though harmless to the goat, please do not try to startle them for a reaction....
This quirky trait has made them a beloved part of Southern agricultural heritage, with roots tracing back to the 1800s in Tennessee.
Life at Fearrington’s (Funny) Belted Barnyard
Fearrington’s Belted Barnyard is more than just a collection of farm animals—it’s a living piece of history. The property has been part of the North Carolina landscape for over two centuries and still maintains its agricultural roots, even as it has grown into a vibrant village destination.
Here, the fainting goats share their home with cows, donkeys, chickens, and other (of the wild variety) animals.
Spring is always a special time on the farm, but the anticipation of new baby goats—known as “kids”—adds an extra layer of excitement. With four goats expecting this month, guests may soon witness wobbly first steps, playful leaps, and the unmistakable charm of newborn kids discovering the world.
Baby goats are known for their boundless energy, often darting around in short bursts and climbing anything they can find. At Fearrington, these moments create unforgettable experiences for visitors.
