September in Fearrington: A Season of Transition

There is something different about September in Fearrington.

It isn't quite summer anymore, but Fall hasn't fully arrived. The days can still be warm, the gardens are still green, and there is plenty of summer left to enjoy. Yet, if you slow down enough to notice, you can feel a subtle shift and change in the air.

The light transforms. The mornings feel a little quieter. The evenings begin to arrive a little earlier. The landscape starts preparing for what comes next.

The outdoor rhythm begins to slow…

A morning walk can feel a little more comfortable. There is a different quality to the air, and the first hints of autumn begin to appear in the trees and gardens.  I’ve even glimpsed some changing foliage.

September also has a feeling of returning to routine.  Schedules become a little more predictable. Activities and gatherings pick up again. There are familiar faces to see and neighbors to run into, perhaps less traveling and more nesting.

The outdoor pool at the Swim and Croquet club prepares for closing on Sept 27h with a pizza party.

Murmurings of Oktoberfest begin….and of course the holidays are on the horizon.

One of my favorite things about Fearrington is that the environment is never quite the same from one month to the next.   But there is a different feeling to September as we emerge from the sluggish nature the summer heat brings.    Even though the landscape is preparing a more dormant phase – there is a feeling of being more alive!

September doesn't demand attention in the way that Spring or Autumn sometimes does but it does awaken the senses.

Maybe that's what I love most about September in Fearrington. It invites you to slow down enough to notice the details—the changing landscape, the familiar faces, the cooler mornings, the longer conversations, all while leaving you with an invigoration to enjoy these things that much more.
