Dear Gentle Reader,

Welcome to Banned Books Week. We've been flying our Read Banned Books flag for years out front, and the threat to your ability to choose what you want to read is becoming more fraught. According to theBanned Index, there are now36,944 documented ban actions nationwide, including26,173 school bans,10,238 prison bans, and532 library bans. Inherently, this is something we at McIntyre's care a lot about. For a link to a sample list of books on our display, click here. For a deeper dive, here's the American Library Association's top 150 most challenged books. It is a list worth looking at as it includes such beloved classics as In the Night Kitchen and To Kill a Mockingbird.

In case you missed our big announcement on Friday, Craig Johnson returns with his new collection of short stories, Have Courage, and his friend A Martinezon Sunday, November 15th at 2pm. A wrote the foreword to this collection and played, in the Longmire television series, unscrupulous casino owner, Jacob Nighthorse. To attend, but with your purchase of a copy of Have Courage from McIntyre's, we will tuck a pair of tickets in your book so you and a friend can attend.

Margot Lesterwill be here today (Wednesday 10/7) at 1:30pm to answer your writerly questions with her monthly Writer's Office Hours. Stuck on a project, homework, or that novel you are tempted to put away? Margot is your gal. Come get advice from a professional writer for free.

This weekend we celebrate the finale of the Thursday Nest series, Dark Reading Matter, by Welshman Jasper Ffordewith a Fforde Ffocus event. So, Saturday the 10th at 2pm we will unleash the dodos (so to speak) with all sorts of silliness. We hope you can join us. Tickets for the day are $49.95 and include a signed copy of Dark Reading Matter and a swag bag. Dinner tickets are limited, but a few still remain for $124.99. And for ffans unable to attend, we will indeed have autographed copies of the book available.

Keebe  and Fearrington GM Theresa Chiettini just got back from a buying trip in Italy.  They met up in Florence after Theresa finished some buying in Milan and scoured vendors around Florence and Rome. Some great discoveries were made, Theresa found some gorgeous leather bags for Dovecote among other items. We are also bringing in some lovely leather backpacks, in addition to a line of handsome eco-friendly cards, bookmarks, boxed notes, and blank books/ journals. So far, we are the only North Carolina outlet to carry this line. Come by to check them out-- they should be in shortly!

The Usual Suspects,

Pete, Johanna, Sarah G., Tyler, Amy, Juliana, Talia, Sarah C. and Keebe

PS Next week, the sophomore effort from Bonnie Garmuslands in McIntyre's. Keebe and Sarah G. have both read it. “I was nervous about this follow up toLessons in Chemistry, but it turns out that my fears were completely unfounded.  All the great writing, the humor, the bittersweet are all here. If you loved Lessons in Chemistry, you will be clamoring for this tale of Batter and the storied poetry journal, Peck & Peck.” --Keebe
