I have received so many requests lately on how to wear a scarf—and whether we had any tutorials to share.
I have a few favorite ways I wear them myself (some of which you’ll see below), but I also came across a wonderful tutorial on YouTube that I thought was worth sharing. It’s incredibly helpful to see the movement and drape in real time, and it offers a few easy techniques that instantly elevate even the simplest outfit.
There’s something transformative about a scarf in summer—it’s not about warmth, but about intention. A simple dress, a crisp white shirt, even a well-worn tee becomes something more considered with the addition of a beautifully chosen scarf.
Here are a few of my favorite ways to wear one now:
THE NECKERCHIEF Fold a cotton or silk scarf into a triangle, then roll and tie it loosely at the neck. Let it sit slightly off-center for an effortless feel. It pairs beautifully with a linen button-down or a simple cotton dress—polished, but never fussy. THE LOOSE DRAPE Drape a longer, lightweight scarf once around your neck and let the ends fall naturally. This works especially well in soft cotton or linen blends and adds just enough movement to an otherwise minimal look. THE SHOULDER WRAP As the day turns to evening, place a scarf gently over your shoulders. Choose something sheer or softly textured—it should feel like a whisper rather than a layer. THE BELTED SCARF For a more styled look, drape a longer scarf and cinch it lightly at the waist with a belt. It creates a long, flattering line and adds quiet structure to dresses or tunics. THE HEAD SCARF A nod to travel and timeless elegance—fold into a triangle and tie beneath the chin or at the nape of the neck. Equally lovely wrapped into a headband or around a low bun.
A NOTE ON CHOOSING
Look for natural fabrics—silk, cotton voile, or linen blends—and prints that feel softly lived-in: faded florals, heritage motifs, or gentle stripes. The beauty of a summer scarf lies in its ease.
We have so many beautiful scarves in the shop right now, with even more arriving from Paris next week, and we would love for you to come by Dovecote. We’re always happy to help you try a few styles and find what feels most like you.
It’s often the smallest detail that makes everything come together.
