This is a difficult topic to write about because I know how polarized everyone is, and I hope you will read this with an understanding of where I am coming from. Putting politics—and everything that surrounds it—aside, this past week gave our team one of those experiences that reminds me just how extraordinary hospitality can be.
We had the honor of cooking for and serving a group of G20 commerce ministers and international delegates while they were meeting in Chapel Hill. For me, this story is not about the subject matter of those meetings. It is about the experience, the trust placed in our team, and the enormous amount of work that went into delivering an evening of this caliber.
The fact that Fearrington was selected to host a dinner for senior representatives from around the world was something our team took very seriously—and something I was incredibly proud of.
What guests see at an evening like this is, hopefully, a dinner that feels seamless. What they do not see are the months of planning, countless hours, changing details, security requirements, and last-minute adjustments that happen behind the scenes.
Gilda spent months working through every aspect of the event, coordinating an extraordinary number of details before the first guest ever arrived. When the day finally came, the logistics became even more complex. There were security checks and protocols unlike those of a typical dinner, schedules that needed to remain flexible, and seating arrangements that continued to change almost until guests were sitting down as well as challenges of navigating nuanced service around translators seated behind their delegate.
Hospitality is always about adapting, but an event like this takes that to another level.
And that is really what this story is about.
I watched our team do what they do best, while taking on the added challenge of two simultaneous dinners in two locations—one for 40 guests and another for 175. The kitchen remained focused as timing shifted. The service team adapted calmly to changes. Everyone understood the significance of the evening while continuing to pay attention to the smallest details and make a very complicated event feel effortless.
To be entrusted with an evening involving guests from so many countries (with their dietary constraints) was an incredible compliment to our culinary and hospitality teams. It spoke to the professionalism, discretion, care, and consistency they bring to their work every day.
By the end of the evening, I think there was a collective exhale.
Months of preparation had come down to a few hours around a table. Guests from across the world had gathered here in our little corner of North Carolina, and our team had done what hospitality does at its very best: create a place where people can come together, be welcomed, and share a meal.
That is the part I will remember.
I was immensely proud of Gilda, our chefs, our service teams, and everyone behind the scenes who helped make the evening happen. It was demanding, exciting, occasionally stressful, and certainly unlike an ordinary night at Fearrington.
And for me, that is the story—my team, the preparation, and the experience.
