Ripe, juicy and impressively silky, Del Barba shows dark berry and red-purple fruit with notes of mint, nectarine and a subtle saline edge. The palate is generous but energetic, with bright acidity, ultra-fine tannins and a satin-like texture that keeps this powerful Zinfandel feeling fresh and approachable.
Turley Wine Cellars is one of California’s benchmark producers of Zinfandel, known for seeking out distinctive old and historic vineyard sites across the state. Del Barba is a relatively new single-vineyard bottling for Turley, first released with the 2021 vintage after the winery had worked with the fruit for more than a decade.
The head-trained vines were planted in the 1980s in Contra Costa’s deep Delhi blow sand, a decomposed-granite soil that helps give the wine its perfumed fruit and unusually fine texture. Fermented with native yeast, the wine spends 15 months in barrel, mostly used French oak, before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Rich fruit and supple tannins make this a great match for barbecue, burgers, smoked meats or hearty tomato-based dishes.
