Bright, fragrant and refreshingly different, this native Cypriot red shows strawberry, wild cherry and rose petal with touches of cocoa, cinnamon and gentle spice. Light to medium-bodied with lively acidity and a little tannic grip, it is juicy and energetic while still carrying enough savory depth to keep it interesting.
Tsiakkas Winery was founded in 1988 in the village of Pelendri and has become one of Cyprus’s leading champions of indigenous grape varieties. Mouklos comes from a tiny 1.3-hectare vineyard high in the Troodos Mountains, planted mainly to Mavro Ambelisimo on sandy, volcanic soils.
The vineyard sits around 920 meters in elevation and includes ungrafted, goblet-trained vines originally planted around 1950. The 2024 is made as a field blend, with a cold soak and 50% semi-carbonic maceration, then bottled without oak aging. Only around 2,000 bottles are produced. Serve it lightly chilled; it is especially good with pork, lamb, charcuterie or Mediterranean vegetable dishes.
