This is Châteauneuf-du-Pape with both richness and lift: 100% Grenache, full-bodied but remarkably silky, with ripe cherry and strawberry, black pepper, dried herbs and a savory touch of dark chocolate. The tannins are plentiful but exceptionally fine, giving the wine a soft, flowing texture rather than heaviness.
Chapelle St. Theodoric is a tiny project from importer Peter Weygandt and Baptiste Grangeon of Domaine de Cristia, focused almost entirely on old-vine Grenache grown in the sandy soils of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The estate is particularly prized for wines that emphasize perfume, freshness and finesse rather than sheer power.
La Guigasse comes from its namesake sandy lieu-dit, where old Grenache is fermented with whole clusters and aged for 24 months in large demi-muids. Only about 4,800 bottles were made in 2022, and the vintage earned exceptional reviews; despite its immediate charm, it has the structure to develop beautifully with time in the cellar.
