Deep, savory and beautifully polished, Hilltops Syrah 2018 layers blackberry and black raspberry with violet, cracked pepper, cured meat and a touch of mint and anise. The palate is silky and medium- to full-bodied, with ripe tannins and a lifted finish that keeps the wine energetic rather than heavy.
Stolpman Vineyards is one of the benchmark producers of Ballard Canyon, where strong Pacific influence and limestone-rich soils are especially well suited to Syrah. Hilltops comes from the estate’s high-density plantings along the vineyard’s center ridge, where wind exposure, rocky soils and low yields give the fruit extra concentration.
The 2018 was made with 30% whole clusters, a technique that adds savory spice, floral lift and structure. Now with several years of bottle age, the wine is in a particularly appealing place: the dark fruit remains generous, while the tannins have softened and the peppery, meaty complexity of Syrah has become more expressive. It is a compelling example of California Syrah with real depth and richness, but also the freshness and savory character that make Ballard Canyon distinctive.
