Rich, savory and firmly structured, Heart and Soul is a proprietary red blend led by Merlot, with dark plum, blackberry and black cherry layered with cedar, baking spice and earthy notes. The palate is broad and smooth, with ripe fruit up front and enough tannin and acidity underneath to keep the wine balanced.
Souther Williams Vineyard is based in Fletcher, North Carolina, in the Crest of the Blue Ridge Henderson County AVA, just south of Asheville. The estate focuses on both European vinifera and lesser-known cool-climate varieties, with vineyards set against the Blue Ridge Mountains on land that has been in the family for generations.
Heart and Soul is one of the winery’s more substantial reds, and with several years of bottle age behind it, the 2018 has moved into a softer, more savory stage while retaining plenty of depth and structure. It’s an impressive showcase of what North Carolina can do with dry, fuller-bodied red wine—ripe, polished and substantial, while still carrying the freshness and character of its mountain-grown fruit.
