Dark, juicy and distinctly Southern Italian, this 100% Susumaniello combines blackberry, raspberry and sour cherry with licorice, cocoa, spice and a subtle herbal note. The palate is generous and silky without becoming heavy, with polished tannins and enough freshness to keep all that ripe fruit lively.
Masseria Li Veli is based in Salento, in the heel of Italy’s boot. The estate’s Askos project is particularly interesting: it was created to preserve and showcase traditional Puglian grape varieties that were in danger of disappearing. Susumaniello is one of these historic local grapes, and Li Veli makes a particularly polished, approachable version.
The wine is aged in French oak barriques and larger barrels, adding richness and spice while keeping the fruit front and center. Weighty, luscious fruit leads the way, balanced by fresh acidity that keeps the wine lively and incredibly food-friendly. A versatile pairing for hard cheeses, smoked meats and charred vegetables.
