Bright, juicy and made for easy drinking, Glou d’Etat is a playful Northern California red blend of 34% Valdiguié, 22% Gamay, 18% Cinsault, 18% Grenache and 8% other varieties. Expect raspberry, ripe cherry and candied red fruit with rose petal and violet, all carried by a light body, low tannins and a fresh, energetic finish.
Jolie-Laide is the project of Scott Schultz, a winemaker known for seeking out less-common California varieties and making wines that are fresh, expressive and a little unconventional. The name Jolie-Laide roughly means “pretty-ugly,” a fitting description for a winery that embraces character and personality over polish for polish’s sake.
Glou d’Etat undergoes carbonic maceration, then is foot-crushed and allowed to finish fermentation with whole clusters. The result is fragrant, juicy and highly drinkable, with just 11.8% alcohol and very little tannic weight. Serve it with a slight chill; it’s the kind of red that works beautifully with pizza, charcuterie, grilled sausages, burgers or simply on its own.
