A fresher, more lifted expression of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the 2021 Tradition blends 65% Grenache with Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Raspberry, black cherry and plum meet pepper, dried herbs and licorice in a medium-to-full-bodied wine framed by fine, savory tannins and bright acidity; excellent with roast lamb, grilled pork or dishes scented with rosemary and thyme.
Founded by Aimé Sabon in 1973 and now led by siblings Christophe and Isabelle Sabon, Domaine de la Janasse has become one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's benchmark estates. Their vineyards span the appellation's varied sands, clay-limestone soils and famous rounded stones, with an emphasis on organic farming and expressing the differences between individual terroirs.
The Tradition is Janasse's signature Châteauneuf-du-Pape blend, assembled from roughly ten hectares of vineyards across several terroirs, including a small contribution from La Crau. The 2021 was hand-harvested, mostly destemmed with around 20% whole clusters retained, then aged for 12 months—Grenache principally in large foudres, with the Syrah and Mourvèdre in French oak barrels—preserving the wine's fruit while adding structure and spice.
