Fearrington Living
Our Village Compost Center!
Between The Gathering Place and Swim and Croquet Club, behind our storage shed is a compost center for the Village. I love the idea of having a designated spot for all of our food and organic scraps. Because Fearrington is nestled in lots and lots of natural forest space, I admittedly sometimes throw my chicken carcass in my backyard for the many fox families that also call Fearrington Village home! However, this is a really good and preferable alternate for those in Townhouses or cluster cul de sac homes that may not have that wooded space. Of course all of the varied neighborhoods in Fearrington Village are encouraged to participate! The compost program also takes meat products and even vegetable husks or thick fruit skins. Just don’t put them in regular plastic bags! Amazon has compostable plastic bags you can buy in bulk for a few cents per bag….I keep one in my fridge and throw everything in it. Since the program began in October of 2024, nearly 5 tons of food waste was diverted from our landfills that equates to almost 1000 pounds of avoided methane emissions and 24,000 pounds of avoided CO2 emissions! Just another aspect of this amazing community coming together to improve our experience….We can all change this world and sometimes it starts with small steps like lessening our garbage output. Go check out the compost space and start making a difference!
