Gentle Reader – November 19
Dear Gentle Reader,
We are closing in on the end of the year. It is a harbinger of many things– including next week’s announcement of the Beltie Prize longlist. Yes, Pete’s list of the 8 best mysteries he read this year is almost here. And yes, we will offer the bundle this year with your choice of 10% discount or free shipping.
This Saturday, November 23rd, at 11am David Rowell will be joined by his oldest friend and musician Bob Funck, whose musical pursuits were the central focus in the final chapter of David’s last book, Wherever the Sound Takes You: Heroics and Heartbreak. This time around, David’s reading of passages from The Endless Refrain: Memory, Nostalgia, and the Threat to New Music will be interspersed with Bob’s live renderings of ‘80s hits whose ubiquitous presence are at the heart of the book’s focus—and consternation. In addition to thought-provoking observations about the hold music from our past has on us–and why–attendees can expect to hear some staples performed live. And true to the spirit of the book’s themes, Bob will also debut a new song. A literary event complete with its own soundtrack!
Then at 2pm, Audrey Perrott will be here to entertain and delight the young’uns with A Hat for House: One Storm, Many Helpers. One windy day, House’s hat blows clean off his head! His friends are happy to help, but nothing they try seems quite right. Then the wind gets even stronger and thunder rumbles, making House wonder how he can keep his family safe and if he’ll ever feel quite like himself again. But just in time, more neighbors come to pitch in. And they have a plan for a new hat that fits him perfectly. Sweetly illustrated and studded with humor, this tale of community is perfect for reminding readers that during tough times, neighbors can work together to help each other. Audrey Perrott does a great job engaging with young readers and we’re delighted to welcome her back for a fun event!
Next Thursday we will celebrate Thanksgiving/Friendsgiving. McIntyre’s will be closed Thursday, but will be ready to go on Friday. Like bells-on-ready-to-go ready. Through the end of November, we will maintain our Wednesday through Sunday 10am to 5pm schedule. December will bring some expanded hours which will make enjoying a small plate next door at Galloways, the way to enjoy a low stress shopping season.
The Usual Suspects,
Pete, Johanna, Sarah, Tyler, Amy, Beth and Keebe
