At McIntyre's Books
Gentle Reader – May 13, 2025
Dear Gentle Reader,
Lots going on this week at McIntyre’s Books…
Book Club Night is SOLD OUT! Please keep us in mind this fall. We will announce our autumnal get together in late August, but if you swing by the store in the next week or so, you can catch our display with the selected titles.
Saturday, May 17th at 11am, Jim Lampley and Art Chansky will be here to discuss Lampley’s memoir, It Happened! A Uniquely Lucky Life in Sports Television. From HBO’s ringside face and voice of boxing, comes a first-person, blow-by-blow account of the evolution of sports television chock full of famous names, history-making events, and never-before-told stories from the world of sports. A great opportunity to catch up with two die hard Tarheels. Then at 2pm, Brendan Slocumbvisits with his latest acclaimed mystery, The Dark Maestro. He will be in conversation with Laura Beth Vietor. Sarah is a huge fan of his mysteries, and this is a great book with which to start off a summer reading stack.
On Sunday, May 18th at 2pm, we have a special poetry event with Joan Barasovski and Maria Rouphail, who will read from their new books and discuss their beloved craft: their influences, how they work, and poetry in today’s world. Joan Barasovska serves on the Board of the North Carolina Poetry Society and hosts a poetry series at McIntyre’s Books. Her poems have been nominated for Best of the Net and three times for a Pushcart Prize. Joan is the author of Birthing Age, Carrying Clare, Orange Tulips, and Unblessed, Unsung. Maria Rouphail, is Senior Lecturer Emerita from North Carolina State University. This small house, this big sky, her fourth poetry collection, explores themes of family trauma and reconciliation, as well as those forces affecting women and the environment.
Next weekend, Saturday, May 24th at 11am, we are thrilled to welcome back crows favorite Annie Hartnett. Her new novel, The Road to Tender Hearts, as Johanna said in her rec, “Annie Hartnett’s novels always have an element of dark humor, but she really dailed it all the way up for The Road to Tender Hearts.” This is another great summer reading candidate.
Then on Sunday, May 25th, we host our monthly NC Poetry Society event with Beth Copeland, Chapman Hood Frazier, and Ralph Earle.
All the best from the Usual Suspects,
Pete, Johanna, Sarah G., Tyler, Amy, Sarah C. and Keebe
