At McIntyre's Books
Gentle Reader – June 11
Dear Gentle Reader,
How in the world is it Father’s Day this weekend?!? If you have a father or father figure you are celebrating on Sunday, please know we have so many great books to recommend and an eclectic offering of cards. Oh, and can we mention that we giftwrap? Enough said…
Our friend Wiley Cash is leading a 4-week virtual workshop on writing mystery and suspense this summer featuring Lisa Unger. Ms. Unger is the New York Times and international bestselling author of twenty-one novels, including The New Couple in 5B. With books published in thirty-three languages and millions of copies sold worldwide, she is regarded as a master of suspense. To register click here. Participants will receive 20% off on copies of The Best American Mystery of Suspense 2023 edited by Lisa Unger when purchased through McIntyre’s.
This Saturday we have another double header!
At 11am, we are delighted to welcome Robin Sloan, author of one of McIntyre’s very best selling staff pics of all time– Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. His latest book, Moonbound, expands the Penumbraverse to new reaches of time and space in a rollicking far-future adventure.
In Moonbound, Sloan has written a novel with the full scope and ambitious imagination of the very books that lit the engines of Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore: an epic quest as only Sloan could conceive it, mixing science fiction, fantasy, good old-fashioned literary storytelling, and unrivaled enthusiasm for what’s next.
Then at 3pm, we have a terrific panel for mystery lovers. Eryk Pruitt, Blood Read Summer, and Rob Hart, Assassins Anonymous, will discuss their latest novels with titan scribe SA Cosby (All Sinners Bleed). Pete is weighing in here, “With Blood Red Summer, it is as if Eryk put on a pair of seven league boots and took a huge step forward. His first book was good, but this one is special. While Rob, with Assassins Anonymous, has created just an entertaining look at what happens when you go cold turkey from killing people (kinda like AA for hired killers). And, of course, with SA, what more can be said about the man who has taken the crime scene by storm?!? This is going to be a blast and not one to be missed.” This event is ticketed– to attend, please buy either a copy of either Blood Red Summer or Assassins Anonymous from McIntyre’s. Pete doesn’t care which title because once you hear these authors talk about their books, you are going to want both.
Sunday, June 23rd, we are holding an open house starting at 2pm for Orit Ramler in celebration of The Box of Life: A Guide to Living with Purpose and Preserving What Matters Most, which offers a unique approach to living a purposeful life for individuals of all ages. Inspired by an intergenerational friendship with her friend Charles, Orit Ramler developed a philosophy and methodology for creating a Box of Life—a collection of curated remembrances that reflect the richness of lived experiences.
The Box of Life is not just a guide to the collection of memories, but also a way to ground oneself in purpose. By exploring the highs, lows, pivotal moments, and essential relationships that shape our experiences, readers can create a legacy that reflects their life narrative.
In the next few newsletters we will focus on summer reading, but in the interim, check this out. Vulture just posted a list of 65 Book-to-Screen Adaptations to Add to Your Reading List. It will give you a leg up when you can honestly say the book was so much better than the movie…
All the best from the Usual Suspects,
Pete, Johanna, Sarah, Tyler, Beth and Keebe
