At McIntyre's Books
Gentle Reader – July 9
Dear Gentle Reader,
This weekend we have two special mystery events, with David Rosenfelt at 11am with his canine-centric mysteries featuring Andy Carpenter, who runs a dog rescue (an event co-sponsored with Chatham Animal Rescue & Education– CARE), and Soho Press authors Eli Cranor and Gary Phillips at 2pm.
Some thoughts from Pete: The good times just keep on rolling event-wise here at McIntyre’s.Saturday, July 13th we have a great double header. First up is David Rosenfelt with the latest in his Andy Carpenter series, Dog Day Afternoon. I’m also really jazzed for 2pm with Eli Cranor and Gary Phillips (not the Gary Phillips we all know and love from Pittsboro). This Gary is from L.A. and has two series set in the City of Angels during the 60’s and early 70’s, one featuring a private eye and the other a photo journalist. Both series give Walter Mosley (and his character Easy Rollins) a run for their money in the sense of putting us very much in a particular place and time. Eli does the same, but his books are more contemporary and closer to home as they’re all set in Arkansas, featuring small town troubled souls who seek something more from life. Broiler is a step apart from his first two and has Eli stretching his creative muscles as he hones his craft. In many ways it took me back to my youth and reading the late, great Harry Crews, who gave all his characters a soul we could recognize and empathize with. A skill that is hard to master, but one that Eli has working in Broiler. Lordy, the 13th is going to another great day at McIntyre’s, and I can’t wait!
And while you are with us on Saturday, swing by Galloway’s Wine & Beer Bar on the lower level of The Belted Goat between 1 pm – 3 pm to learn about different wines. Want to learn more about their free weekly tastings? Check the Fearrington Village calendar for our wine tastings and dinners!
All the best from the Usual Suspects,
Pete, Johanna, Sarah, Tyler, Beth and Keebe
