At McIntyre's Books
Gentle Reader – July 23
Dear Gentle Reader,
Just a gentle reminder that THERE IS STILL A MONTH OF SUMMER LEFT before we rush headlong into the start up of schooling and pumpkin spice fill-in-the-blanks. A month to savor reading in a hammock, walking the beach or mountain trails, and enjoying peak peach and tomato season.
This coming week will be a peak event week at McIntyre’s. We are hosting a special storytime this Thursday, July 25th at 10:30am with Aimee Lucido for her charming picture book, Pasta Pasta Lotsa Pasta. A family dinner gets out of hand as guest after guest arrives with a different pasta request in this “delectable” (Kirkus Reviews) and rambunctious rhyming picture book. How much pasta is too much pasta? Swing by to find out for a fun morning– with an art project to boot.
Saturday, July 27th at 11am we are delighted to launch the publication of Paul Green: North Carolina Writers on the Legacy of the State’s Most Celebrated Playwright with co-editor Georgann Eubanks and contributors Phillip Shabazz and Marjorie Hudson. This anthology examines the life and selected works of North Carolina’s most distinguished playwright of the 20th century, Paul Green (1894-1981). Paul Green is best known for his outdoor historical dramas, which are still performed across the United States. However, he was not only a Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, but was also an activist committed to human rights, racial equity, prison reform, and ending the death penalty. This anthology includes the frank reflections from an award-winning array of contemporary North Carolina writers.
Then on Sunday, July 28th at 2pm, our monthly series of poetry readings with the North Carolina Poetry Society convenes withKathy Ackerman, Cal Nordt, and Khalisa Rae.
Next Saturday, August 3rd at 11am, Juliet Grames arrives to share from our staff favorite mystery (get this, Sarah, Pete and Keebe ALL LOVED this novel– getting three booksellers to agree on anything is quite the feat!), The Lost Boy of Santa Chionia. This novel garnered a starred rating from Publisher’s Weekly and is one of the most heralded books of the summer. But don’t take our word for it, put it on your calendar and prepare to be charmed… “As a mystery, Grames’s novel is as gripping as they come; it’s also a deeply satisfying character study of an outsider learning more about a place than she’d bargained for.” —Publishers Weekly (Best of Summer, Staff Pick)
And finally, (speaking of shopping local) we just received a series of 1000 piece jigsaw puzzles celebrating the flora and fauna of North Carolina from a local puzzle startup (see the picture above with cocreator Melanie). While not up yet on the website, you can swing by the store to pick up Native Trees, Wildflowers, Birds, or Mushrooms. $22.50.
All the best from the Usual Suspects,
Pete. Johanna, Sarah, Tyler, Beth and Keebe
