Gentle Reader – February 5, 2025
Dear Gentle Reader,
Time is flying! February whistled in with new books to read and events to attend. Tomorrow Margot Lester will be here for Writer’s Office Hours with special guest Duncan Murrell and new hours of 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. Bring whatever writing project you are working on to get unstuck or receive some amazing editorial advice.
Valentine’s Day is around the corner, so if you are looking for a card for your loved one, a great book to read, or a gift to show your appreciation– drop by the store. We have Jellycats and Warmies stuffed animals, books of poetry and love potions, and can help you find that perfect tome that shows how much you “get” them.
This Saturday at 11am, we welcome Elaine Neil Orr, who will discuss her novelDancing Woman with beloved author Diane Chamberlain. Next Saturday,February 15th, Andrew Lawler comes to town to talk about his new book about the American Revolution, A Perfect Frenzy: A Royal Governor, his Black Allies, and the Crisis that Spurred the American Revolution. History lovers take note, this book is getting a lot of attention and just received a great New York Times review.
With sadness we join the group mourning the passing of William Leuchtenburg, the esteemed FDR historian in a class by himself, William Rand Kenan Distinguished Professor at UNC, and always welcome visitor at McIntyre’s. He passed away last week at 102. Dr. Leuchtenburg welcomed standing room only crowds at McIntyre’s and students fought to get into his classes at UNC. Keebe had some incredible luck, falling into one of his classes and became a history major because of him. While we cannot do his life justice here, here’s his obituary in the New York Times.
The Usual Suspects,
Pete, Johanna, Sarah, Tyler, Amy and Keebe
