Gentle Reader – December 3
Dear Gentle Reader,
This Saturday at 11am, we are delighted to kick off December with a trio of beloved authors from Algonquin Books, celebrating paperback releases of their work. Jill McCorkle is coming out to commemorate the paperback release of Old Crimes, her most recent collection of short stories. Jill will be joined by Lee Smith, author of the novel Silver Alert, and Daniel Wallace, for his memoir This Isn’t Going to End Well. Each of these books was a staff pick, so you just cannot go wrong picking any of them. Rumor has it we there will be sugar cookies to be had…
December hours have expanded for the holidays. Now through December 17, we are open Wednesday though Friday from 10am until 7pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. So you can pop by after work, make your selections and slide over next door to grab some small plates and a glass of wine at Galloway’s Beer & Wine Bar. Sounds just so civilized…
And overdue congratulations are in order to Kathleen DuVal, the 2024 winner of the prestigious Cundill History Prize for Native Nations: A Millennium In North America. To honor hostory prize-winners from UNC, we have stocked up on Natice Nations as well as David Zucchino‘s Wilmington”s Lie: The Murderous Coup of 1898 and the Rise of White Supremacy (winner of the Pulitzer Prize) and John Sweet’s A Sewing Girl’s Tale: A Story of Crime and Consequences in Revolutionary America (winner of the Bancroft, the Francis Parkman, and the Gotham Book Prizes).
All the best from the Usual Suspects,
Pete, Johanna, Sarah, Tyler, Beth, Amy and Keebe
