Gentle Reader – April 15, 2025
Dear Gentle Reader,
Lots to update everyone on!
For starters, tickets are moving quickly for the Chatham Literacy’s Spring for Literacy Luncheon on Thursday, May 15th at the Governor’s Club from 11am to 2pm. Chatham Literacy is part of the backbone of this county and needs our support. The featured speaker is beloved Chatham writer, Marjorie Hudson, who will talk about her most recent work, Indigo Field. Independent Bookstore Day will be here in two weeks on Saturday, June 26th! We have quite a bit planned to celebrate as we are also marking McIntyre’s 36th birthday. To kick things off in style, (weather permitting) Johanna Banana will host an outdoors storytime in the Village Center with special guest Billy Sugarfix. Billy will dust off his red ukulele and lead the kids in a song or two. Then at 11am, Andrew Taylor-Troutman will read from and discuss his latest work, This is the Day, a yearlong journal of observing national days for things as diverse and weird as bobbleheads, Yo-Yos, hairball awareness, and serendipity. Taylor-Troutman explores his local North Carolina community and delves into ancient history. Throughout the day we will have giveaways on the half hour of books and McIntyre’s merch, plus exclusive Independent Bookstore Day items for sale. Oohh, we will also have a Golden Ticket from Libro.FM hidden in the store! The first person to find it wins a grand prize of 12 free audiobook credits (a year’s worth of credits) to use on the Libro.fm platform, our favorite and only audiobook provider. And by the way we will have cookies made by the Fearrington House bakers! Please add us to your calendar.
If you’ve read our last few newsletters you know we have some great events coming up in May and June too. See the list at the bottom of this message or check out our homepage for a rundown. You can buy your tickets for our Spring Book Club Night(Thursday 5/15) and reserve your spot at our author events with Craig Johnson (6/1) and Abraham Verghese (6/4) online or in-person at McIntyre’s.
Finally, we’re announcing another terrific upcoming event with the Our State Book Club on June 20th in the Fearrington Barn. Author and host Wiley Cash and Our State Editor in Chief Elizabeth Hudson will be joined by beloved North Carolina authors Clyde Edgerton and Bland Simpson for an evening of books, music and laughter.
