When Southern Women Cook Luncheon

Join Toni Tipton-Martin, Morgan Bolling, KC Hysmith, and Leoneda Inge in The Fearrington Barn on Thursday, November 7th at 11:30am to celebrate America’s Test Kitchen’s new cookbook, When Southern Women Cook. We’ll be serving a buffet-style luncheon inspired by the book’s recipes, and all diners will leave with a signed copy of the cookbook.

A first-of-its-kind cookbook featuring more than 300 America’s Test Kitchen recipes and fascinating insights into the culinary heroes of the American South. Tour the diverse history of the region through the voices of women contributors who’ve shaped the cuisine.

Shepherded by Cook’s Country Editor in Chief Toni Tipton-Martin and Cook’s Country editor and TV personality Morgan Bolling, When Southern Women Cook showcases the hard work, hospitality, and creativity of women who have given soul to Southern cooking from the start. Every page amplifies their contributions, from the enslaved cooks making foundational food at Monticello to Mexican Americans accessing memories with colorful conchas today.

Covering every region and flavor of the American South, from Texas Barbecue to Gullah Geechee rice dishes, this collection of 300 recipes is a joyous celebration of Southern cuisine and its diverse heroes, past and present.

 

Toni Tipton-Martin is a culinary journalist and community activist and the author of the James Beard Award–winning The Jemima Code and Jubilee, named a James Beard Award winner and Book of the Year by the IACP. Toni was also recognized with the 2020 Trailblazer Award by the International Association of Culinary Professionals. Her collection of more than three hundred African American cookbooks has been exhibited at the James Beard House, and she has twice been invited to the White House to participate in First Lady Michelle Obama’s programs to raise a healthier generation of kids. She is a founding member of the Southern Foodways Alliance and Foodways Texas.

North Carolina–born Morgan Bolling is a Cook’s Country TV personality and executive editor. She is a Southern cooking and barbecue expert.

KC Hysmith is a Texas-bred, North Carolina-based writer, food historian, recipe developer, and photographer. She is interested in the intersection between food, gender, and the digital landscape. Her writing and work have appeared in Food52, SpruceEats, Gastronomica, The Boston Globe, Sift, Culture Magazine, Indyweek, The Local Palate, and more.

Leoneda Inge is the co-host of “Due South” — WUNC’s new daily radio show. She explores modern and historical constructs to tell stories of poverty and wealth, health and food culture, education and racial identity. The recipient of several awards, including Gracie awards from the Alliance of Women in Media, she was part of WUNC team that won an Alfred I. duPont Award from Columbia University for the group series – “North Carolina Voices: Understanding Poverty.”
