RED TAIL RIDGE WINERY

Red Tail Ridge Winery is a boutique, terroir-driven winery located on the western shore of Seneca Lake in New York’s renowned Finger Lakes wine region. Founded in 2005 and owned by husband-and-wife team Nancy Irelan and Michael Schnelle, the estate focuses on crafting expressive, precision-focused wines that reflect the unique climate and geology of its vineyards.

The winery is committed to sustainability and environmental stewardship, exemplified by its use of geothermal energy and responsible viticultural practices. Its production facility was the first winery building in New York State to achieve LEED Gold certification, underscoring this dedication.
Red Tail Ridge produces a diverse portfolio of cool-climate varietals, including Sparkling options, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Blaufränkisch, Dornfelder, and Teroldego, often showcasing distinctive and lesser-known grapes alongside classic Finger Lakes styles.
NANCY IRELAN

Nancy Irelan is the co-owner and winemaker of Red Tail Ridge Winery, one of the Finger Lakes’ most innovative and sustainability-driven wine producers. With over 35 years of experience in the wine industry, Nancy brings a rare combination of scientific expertise, global perspective, and creative viticultural vision to her work.

She holds a Ph.D. in grape genetics from the University of California, Davis, where she studied under leading researchers in viticulture and enology. Early in her career, Nancy spent more than a decade at E&J Gallo Winery, ultimately serving as Vice President of Viticulture & Enology R&D, where she led research and innovation efforts that informed large-scale production practices and varietal performance.
In 2002, Nancy and her husband Michael Schnelle left California to pursue their dream of building a boutique estate winery in New York’s Finger Lakes. They purchased land on Seneca Lake and founded Red Tail Ridge Winery in 2005 with a focus on precision, terroir-driven expression, and environmentally responsible practices. Under her direction, the winery was the first in New York State to earn LEED Gold certification—a testament to their commitment to sustainability.
Known for her thoughtful approach to both vineyard and cellar, Nancy champions cool-climate varietals and adventurous plantings such as Dornfelder, Teroldego, Blaufränkisch, and traditional favorites like Riesling and Pinot Noir. Her winemaking philosophy prioritizes minimal intervention and genuine expression of vintage and place.
