We’re pleased to share that new Hartford has arrived at Thistle & Oak — and it’s everything we love about French style with a distinctly American spirit.
HARTFORD'S STORY
Founded in 1979 by French designer Yves Chareton, Hartford was born from a simple idea. While living in the United States, Chareton set out to recreate the classic 1950s American shirts he loved but could no longer find. A chance encounter with a New York fabric supplier — and a cache of vintage Oxford and chambray — led to the brand’s first collection. Soon after, the studio returned to Paris, where Hartford evolved into a label that blends American casual ease with European refinement.
The result is what they call “Alternative Classics.” Timeless pieces, beautifully made, with just enough personality to stand apart.
Hartford is known for exceptional fabrics — French linen, fine Italian cottons, and carefully sourced Japanese materials. The cuts are classic, the tailoring relaxed but precise. Subtle details — a small unexpected print, a playful embroidery, a thoughtful finishing touch — give each piece character without shouting.
For spring, we’re especially excited about the Paul shirt, Hartford’s most iconic style, known for its effortless fit and superior fabric. You’ll also find relaxed yet refined trousers (some with drawstring waists for modern comfort), lightweight jackets, and the kind of easy layers that define smart-casual dressing.
The brand’s aesthetic draws from 1960s surf culture, folk rock influences, and the quiet beauty of the French coast — and it shows. These are pieces designed to be worn, lived in, and aged well.
If you appreciate quality, understated style, and clothing that feels as good as it looks, Hartford should be on your radar this season.
Stop by Thistle & Oak to see the new arrivals — spring has never looked so effortless.
