Sometimes September and October can meld together. While September often feels like it still has a foot firmly planted in Summer and having difficulty letting go….October definitely feels more chill and feels like the real transition into winter has begun. The days grow cooler and the leaves begin to turn, and this is when you really notice the shortening days. The Village seems to take on a beautiful new personality—one filled with vibrant reds, golden yellows, warm oranges, and the unmistakable feeling that Fall has truly arrived. It may take a little longer in Fearrington Village and central NC, but by the end of the month the foliage is markedly transformed!
The Farmer’s market takes on a new golden glow, whether it is the changing medley of autumn soup choices or the flower bouquets in scarlet and orange – everything seems to acquire a Fall sheen.
Walking through the village as the night settles is one of my favorite times. That Halloween feeling that is pervasive this month really takes hold as one walks the crepuscular hour. If one really pays attention, the crickets swan song can be deafening, they only have weeks more to live. The Screech and Barred owls are becoming a little more territorial and their courtship calls are just beginning. I love those creepy calls! The coyotes are traveling and reshuffling their family groups as winter approaches and the fox are shifting their routines. If you ever have heard a fox calling at night – you will not soon forget that sound! October settles on the skin like a darkening but very soft cloak.
In October, of course, Fearrington offers variety. You can make the season as active—or as relaxing – or as spooky —as you like.
For some, fall means festive events and gathering with friends. For others, it means peaceful walks, beautiful scenery, good food, and quiet afternoons. It also often seems to be a quiet time to take a breath before the frenzy of the upcoming holidays are upon us. For me October seems to call to my disquiet heart and offers me solace as I enjoy the sounds of Fearringtons' wildlife preparing their seasonal renewal and eventual rest…..
