Hartford was founded by Yves Chareton in 1979, with roots that stretch between the United States and France. The idea was to reinterpret classic American wardrobe staples with a more refined European sensibility. One of the brand’s earliest breakthroughs came when Chareton acquired old stocks of Oxford and chambray fabrics in New York and used them to create vintage-inspired shirts that felt unlike anything else on the market at the time. A few years later, the studio returned to Paris, where Hartford continued to grow into the effortlessly chic label it is today.
What we love most is the balance. Hartford has that wonderfully relaxed, slightly undone French ease, but the pieces are still polished enough to wear almost anywhere. The brand draws inspiration from the spirit of the 1960s, the California coast, the Hamptons, surf culture, and the Atlantic landscape of southwestern France, creating a look that feels casual, timeless, and quietly sophisticated.
