Dear Gentle Reader,
Big news around here last week. Helen Whybrow‘s memoir, The Salt Stones, was just announced on the National Book Awards’ nonfiction longlist. We are thrilled that this thoughtful, profoundly moving meditation on the lessons and wisdom that come from raising a family, tending sheep, and living close to the land is getting its due. Helen was just here on Saturday, so we have plenty of signed copies. Brava Helen and Milkweed Editions!
This Saturday, September 20th at 11am, Mur Lafferty returns with the latest saga in The Midsolar Murders series, Infinite Archive. Amateur sleuth Mallory Vridian has just about got her bearings aboard the space station she calls home, but now the physical embodiment of the internet is on its way, and it is bringing murder with it. “A super entertaining read with great character development, neat aliens, and an engaging plot.”– Buzz Feed
Mur will be in discussion with Natania Barron, the award-winning fantasy author of Queen of None; Natania is preoccupied with mythology, monsters, mayhem, and magic. From medieval tales to Regency fantasy romance, her often historically-inspired novels are lush with description and vibrant characters.
Next weekend, Saturday, September 27th at 11am, Susan Gregg Gilmore returns with a new novel, The Curious Case of Leonard Bush. She will be in conversation with Heather Frese, author of The Saddest Girl on the Beach.
Saturday, November 8th we are hosting a ticketed event with Lily Kingfor her novel, Heart the Lover. “King’s swoony story of love and literature, of paths taken and not taken, of the past selves we never truly leave behind, is quietly robust and nearly impossible to put down.” —Booklist (starred review). Lily will be in conversation with Algonquin Books’ Executive Editor (and UNC classmate) Kathy Pories. This is one of the most anticipated books this fall. To attend the event, buy your copy of Heart the Lover from McIntyre’s to snag a place for you and a friend.
And some Book Club News. Our fall events are set. As our get togethers have grown in popularity, we thought to offer two back to back events this fall. The first one is on Thursday, October 16th at 6:30 pm. Over wine and bites, the McIntyre’s staff and special guest Julie Isgrigg (she’s our Hachette Book Group sales rep) will present recommended titles for book clubs and intrepid readers. Friday, October 17th, join us for coffee and pastries as we welcome Linda-Marie Barrett. Linda-Marie is the author of Creating a Salon, which is packed with ideas on strengthening your discussions. McIntyre’s staff will also present some titles as well. Both events promise lively discussion and our signature giveaways. We hope you will join us.
The Usual Suspects,
Pete, Johanna, Sarah G., Tyler, Amy, Sarah C. and Keebe
