Fearrington Living
We named her Bessie
Born and orphaned on Sept 25th, yet never alone in Fearrington Village. This precious, perfectly belted Galloway calf has stolen our hearts! There is nothing more soul uplifting as watching her happy, bouncing antics in the pasture, where she currently resides with the goats and chickens. From the moment she came into this world, she has been cared for by Laura, Bob and Ken. Laura has become her surrogate, ensuring that she has a big bottle of milk 4 times of day, gentle comfort, loads of play time and lots and lots of love.
Recently she has begun to nibble on the sweet grasses and eat some grain. Her favorite place is up against the fence with the grown cows nearby, alas, still too young to be among them just yet, they watch her with weary curiosity, and she rests quietly beside. Sometimes they moo, she is learning to too. She lives loudly and runs and jumps with contagious joy. So many residents, Chatham county neighbors and even a bus of Galloway Ridge residents have come to watch her thrive among the back drop of our small barn. She belongs to all of us now. And in her long lashed deeply dark eye, she unknowingly holds us in her thrall and brings us peace and sometimes, strangely, hope.
