Wine Dinner – Pinea Vineyards – October 23, 2025
Fearrington is pleased to present to you the wines of Pinea with owner Hugo del Pozzo. Pinea winery resides in the Ribera del Duero of central Spain, a region known for big, dark bodied red wines. Pinea, however, is showing a new face of Ribera to the world, one of elegance and diversity, and they are getting top reviews from critics for their style. They are the first winery to produce the top Spanish score in red, white and rosé from Wine Enthusiast. The 2018 Pinea Estate Red was the 4th highest rated Spanish wine of the year from Wine Spectator. James Suckling has credited Pinea for “flipping the script” of Ribera del Duero, and Jeb Dunnick praises their vineyard-first philosophy. Fearrington Wine Director Troy Revell met Hugo earlier this year and within 10 minutes of tasting through the lineup had invited Hugo back for an evening event. Troy says, “The Pinea wines ride that line of elegance and complexity, as all great wines of the world, where you can enjoy them with a fine meal or more simply on their own. They are versatile and unique, and we cannot wait to share them with you.” Chef Paul Gagne’s 5-course dinner menu will pair with 7 memorable wines.
PINEA
The Pinea winery is the dream come true of childhood friends, Vicente Pliego and Hugo Del Pozzo, who shared an ambitious purpose: to produce wines on par with the best in the world. To achieve that ambitious goal, Vicente and Hugo assembled 85 acres of mature vineyards (30 to 95+ year-old vines) in the ‘Grand Cru’ region of the Ribera del Duero, Spain. Vineyards ranging from 35 to 95+ years planted in a mosaic of soils with abundant limestone and thanks to the high elevation (3,000+ Ft.), the grapes endure 40-50 degree diurnal-nocturnal temperature shifts, contributing to their tremendous character. Pinea’s estate vineyards are dry-farmed following organic, sustainable and bio-dynamic viticulture practices. As a result, whether White, Rosé or Red colored, the Pinea wines capture the elusive combination that the best Ribera del Duero wines are known for: lifted & perfumy aromatics, complexity, elegant texture, and a long, lingering finish.
HUGO DEL POZZO
Hugo Del Pozzo founded the Pinea Winery with a simple but ambitious purpose: to produce some of the best wines in the World. To do so, along with childhood friend Vicente Pliego, they assembled 85 acres of mature vineyards situated near Olmedillo de Roa – the northern edge or Grand Cru part of the Ribera del Duero region. The vineyards benefit from extreme weather and limestone-rich soils, and are farmed following organic and sustainable viticulture practices that provide grapes a unique sense of place. A world-class team of winemakers then pays attention to detail in every step of the wine-making process, resulting in wines characterized by lifted aromatics, complexity and elegant texture.
Hugo’s interest in fine wine is rooted on fond teenage memories of large family gatherings on weekends pairing wine with amazing company and good food – Italian on his Father’s family, Spanish on his Mother’s, paired with respective wines. He believes a fine bottle of wine has the ability to transcend time, by awakening our senses and creating joyful emotions, and in so doing, becoming part of memorable moments.
