At McIntyre's Books
Gentle Reader – October 7, 2025
Dear Gentle Reader,
Welcome to quite an event filled week at McIntyre’s! First off, we have a brace of Book Club events, but you do not have to be in a book club to attend. Intrepid readers are just as welcome! Thursday evening is Book Club Night, and the McIntyre’s staff will be sharing book recs and giveaways with wine and bites and a presentation by our Hachette Book Group rep, Juie Isgrigg. Julie will weigh in on hot titles for the season.Friday morning, we are back with Our Book Club Morning Social with more staff recs, coffee, pastry, and Linda-Marie Barrett, who will talk about her book, Creating a Salon: The Magic of Conversations that Matter. Ticket cutoff is tomorrow (Wednesday) at noon.
Saturday, October 18th at 11am, Sara Johnson returns to share from her latest Alexa Glock adventure, Bone Chilling. Glock is teetering on a precipice, the ground threatening to open up beneath her. And it’s not just the immediate peril of retrieving a long-lost hiker’s skull, given up by a melting and dangerous glacier as more is in play. Then at 2pm, we hope you will bring the young’uns to a kids graphic novel workshop with Tate Godwin. It is free to attend, and no materials necessary! Paper and drawing utensils will be provided.
The ticket window closes on October 22nd for the final meeting this year meeting of the Our State Book Club with Wiley Cash, Elizabeth Kostova, and Elizabeth Hudson. On Wednesday, October 29th we will gather for a spellbinding evening of conversation, wine and nibbles. Kostova’s novel, The Historian, is the record-breaking, celebrated masterpiece that “refashioned the vampire myth into a compelling contemporary novel, a late-night page-turner” (San Francisco Chronicle). Tickets can be purchased here,
Next Saturday, October 25th, Justin Laborde will discuss his nonfiction work,Scattered Far and Wide: The Naval Academy Class of ’38 at War, which follows this class as they rise from junior officers to combat leaders in World War II’s most pivotal battles. Through firsthand accounts and deep research, Laborde brings their stories of courage, sacrifice, and survival vividly to life. Then on Sunday, the 26th at 2pm, our series with the North Carolina Poetry Society concludes 2025 with readings by Joyce Compton Brown, John Hoppenthaler, and Adrian Rice. Stay tuned for the 2026 schedule.
Lily King will be here before you know it. Saturday, November 8th at 11am, join us in the Barn for a ticketed conversation between beloved novelist Liy King and her UNC classmate and Executive Editor of Algonquin Books, Kathy Pories. King’s novel Heart the Lover is getting rave and starred reviews from all over, not the least of which we must count FIVE McIntyre’ staffers. To attend, purchase a copy of Heart the Lover from McIntyre’s, and you and a friend can attend.
All the best from the Usual Suspects,
Pete, Johanna, Sarah G., Tyler, Amy, Juliana, Sarah C. and Keebe
