FULL TIME GARDENER

Overview 

Gardeners help keep Fearrington Village’s roughly 20 acre Village Center looking exceptional year round. This person would be part of a team of five gardeners who have responsibilities for maintaining ornamental garden beds, water features and cutting gardens in dedicated sections or zones of the Village Center. Learn more about our gardens here.

This gardener is supported as needed by an experienced grounds crew which handles tasks involving mechanized equipment like lawn maintenance, irrigation, hedge trimming, tree removal, etc. Gardeners and groundskeepers are employees of Fitch Creations, Inc., a family company which and owns and manages the Inn, the shops, restaurants, spa, in the Village Center and continues to build the Fearrington residential community. At the heart of the Village Center is the 32 room Fearrington House Inn, a full service property and is a longstanding, proud member of the Paris-based hospitality association, Relais & Chateaux.

Job Description

The Fearrington Village Gardener shall:

  • Take full ownership of a specific garden section. Gardeners are expected to design innovative, ever-evolving plant combinations and maintain the garden as a living work of art.
  • Perform general horticultural duties such as design, installation and maintenance of display gardens, including mulching, weeding, watering, pruning, etc.
  • Ensure public walkways and patios are kept free from plant debris.
  • Monitor for plant pests and diseases and apply treatments using eco-friendly best practices.
  • Operate gardening tools including golf carts, blowers, push carts, and hand tools, ensuring all applicable safety standards are followed.
  • Engage with guests and visitors, answering plant-related questions, general village center questions and in general fostering a welcoming atmosphere.

Education and Experience

  • At least 3 years hands-on horticulture work experience, i.e. public garden, plant nursery, private gardening. 
  • Strong knowledge of plant species that thrive in our area, soil management, plant sourcing and maintenance techniques.
  • Ideally has experience interacting with and working in close proximity to the general public.
  • Ability to accomplish tasks around constraints such as business hours, weather extremes, events on property, etc.
  • Be a self-starter with an independent work ethic and a commitment to the ethos of sharing beauty with others.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to perform heavy lifting up to 40 lbs.

An Associate or B.S. degree in horticulture or related field is a plus but not required. Graduation from a reputable public garden training program is a plus.

Compensation

PART TIME GARDENING ASSISTANT

Job description
Do you have a passion for plants, people and the outdoors? Fearrington Village seeks a part-time gardening assistant to support its team of gardeners who keep the village center looking exceptional year round. You’ll find satisfaction contributing to maintaining our extensive gardens – an important reason why guests dine, shop, stay and celebrate with us and make the village center a regional destination. The landscaping team currently includes four experienced, full time gardeners and three in grounds keeping. This is an ideal situation for someone looking to grow their horticultural talents.

About the Position
This person would perform village-wide tasks such as:

  •  Weed removal, pruning shrubs, mulching, leaf removal, sweeping and blowing public pathways, collecting litter, fallen branches, assisting in plant installations, etc.
  • Seasonal tasks such as tidying perennials, annuals and bulbs, hand watering beds as needed and hand filling and cleaning water features and ponds.
  • Other tasks as needed.

This person will take project or task input from the gardeners but will report to the department manager.

Weekly hours worked would be approximately 20-25. There is flexibility as long as work occurs Monday to Friday with significant overlap with gardeners’ schedules.

Skills Required
He or she must:

  • Be interested in the field of ornamental horticulture, and possess knowledge of plants and gardening techniques.
  • Have experience in the use of gardening hand tools.
  • Have previous outdoor work experience, i.e. a public garden, garden center, gardening for private clients, farm, park, etc.
  • Be able to work in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Have a friendly, outgoing personality and good communication skills.
  • Be able to work on one’s own and as part of a team.
  • Be able to follow directions and have an attention to detail.
  • Have at least a high school degree and an active driver’s license.

FULL TIME PM PASTRY LINE COOK

ull Time – Thursday – Sunday, generally 12pm – 10pm

 

Compensation for Pastry Line Cooks DOE and negotiable.

Pastry Line Cook Responsibilities include:

  • Prepare pastries and desserts for dinner/bar guests
  • Follow recipes and assist in the development of new pastry/dessert recipes
  • Follow prep list and ensure all pastry ingredients are fresh before serving
  • Ensure all pastry coolers and storage areas are maintained, neat, organized and rotated
  • Maintain highest sanitary conditions
  • Ensures all work areas are safe & report any unsafe conditions
  • Other duties as assigned

Candidates must:

  • Have previous pastry experience in a high volume quality kitchen but, will train the right person
  • Be a team player, self motivator
  • Possess excellent communication and organizational skills

CATERING & SPECIAL EVENTS STAFF

Catering and Special Event staff are responsible for working special events on the property including weddings and corporate functions. These functions are located at one of Fearrington’s on-site venues, including The Fearrington Barn and The Garden Terrace. Recently, Forbes Travel Guide, America’s most trusted hospitality ranking system, listed The Fearrington House Inn as the nation’s “top luxury hotel for weddings.” It’s a great opportunity to become a part of a great team!

The Catering and Special Event team is responsible for site preparation, food service and upholding a high standard for customer service. Work is year round, but seasonal with spring and fall being the busiest times. They will report to the catering manager.

Long work days are common (approximately 12+/- hours, working inside and outside, and many events are nights and weekends (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). 

Responsibilities include:

  • Set up for events; including cleaning, stocking and set-up of regularly used items such as tablecloths and place settings, arranging table placement and putting up a buffet, carry trays to serve guests and cleaning up at the event’s conclusion.
  • A catering staff’s duties during the event can vary based on the situation, but, in general, they must be able to focus on the job while staying on their feet and moving about freely, which can include bending, climbing stairs and carrying items weighing 25-50 pounds.
  • Good communication is important, as is being able to follow directions efficiently and meeting the physical demands of the job. A positive attitude while on the job is also essential.
  • Catering staff must adhere to health and safety standards at all times, even when closing down at the end of the event, which will include breaking down the table set up and taking tablecloths and linens to the laundry.

Qualifications include:

  • Ability to arrive at work in a timely manner and with a pleasing disposition
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as banquet event orders
  • Ability to prioritize work tasks, multi-task, and maintain focus
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Previous customer service experience is preferred but not required

LINE COOK

Join one of America’s top fine dining restaurants with a team of dedicated professionals. A line cook is responsible for the daily preparation of food items and will report to the Sous Chef or Executive Chef. Responsibilities include:

  • Setting up station according to restaurant guidelines
  • Preparing all food items in a sanitary and timely manner
  • Following recipes, portion control and presentation as set by the Restaurant
  • Restocking of all items as needed during the shift
  • Cleaning and maintaining the station practicing good safety, sanitation and organizing skills
  • Properly using all equipment in station
  • Assisting with the cleaning and organization of kitchen, walk-in coolers and all storage areas
  • Performing additional responsibilities as requested by the Chef, Sous Chef or Executive Chef as needed

 

Qualifications include:

  • Skilled professional cooking, knife handling, kitchen safety and sanitation practices and food handling
  • Previous experience
  • English language communications skills
  • Ability to take direction, work in a team environment and work calmly and effectively under pressure
  • Committed to quality service
  • Ability to stand during entire shift, occasional exposure to hot and cold, lift up to 50 pounds on occasion
