Groundskeeper

The groundskeeper is part of an experienced team that maintains sites at Fearrington including its Village Center, a destination known for boutique shops, exceptional restaurants and extensive gardens. The approximately 20 acres of grounds are open year round to customers and also serve as a backdrop for events such as weddings and meetings.

He or she will assist the Grounds Superintendent in a variety of tasks, involving both physical and mechanized labor, and with and without supervision. He or she will also work with the other members of the landscaping department that include two other groundskeepers and five gardeners.

Responsibilities

  • Mow lawns, prune bushes and trees, edge walkways and in general give the grounds a manicured look.
  • Operate snow removal equipment during the winter to keep walkways and building entrances cleared and safe.
  • Perform special landscaping or planting projects as deemed necessary by the Grounds Superintendent.
  • Collaborate with the team to make sure grounds are always properly cared for.
  • Perform regular maintenance and minor repairs on the lawn care equipment and tools and keep tool storage areas tidy, safe and organized.
  • Under the direction of the Grounds Superintendent, he or she will provide support to the gardeners as needed, from delivering topsoil to a garden site to leaf removal.
  • Other responsibilities include but are not limited to: plant pick ups at area nurseries, hand pruning, plant removal and installations using hand tools like shovels, and changing outdoor light bulbs.

The groundskeeping team works similar hours as set by the Grounds Supervisor. After storms, it may be necessary outside of normal work hours for the groundskeeper to help remove downed vegetation and to clear pathways of snow and ice.

Attire is jeans and comfortable and seasonally appropriate “Fearrington Gardens” shirts which the company provides. The groundskeeper will present a clean and groomed appearance to the public.

Qualifications

He or she must:

  • Have at least 5 years’ experience as a groundskeeper in either commercial or residential settings.
  • Be a reliable worker who is able to perform routine tasks without supervision.
  • Have strong attention to detail.
  • Be skilled and comfortable communicating with co-workers and the public.
  • Be able to work in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Be experienced using equipment such as riding mowers, push mowers, string trimmers, blowers, and trucks. Must have an active driver’s license with no restrictions. Experience operating a bobcat (which we use for grading, loading and excavating) is a plus.
  • Have complied with company and governmental safety requirements, and in general fostered an accident free workplace.

The following is desirable but not required:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • A certification, degree or major in horticulture or landscaping.
  • Bilingual skills (English and Spanish).

Compensation

This position is full time and year round. He or she will receive a competitive wage and benefits including company sponsored health care and retirement plan.
