Job Description

This is an existing, full time position. We seek a gardener who will:

  • Perform all duties associated with the design, installation and care of assigned garden displays and maintain cleanliness including walkways and patios to the highest standards.
  • Perform secondary roles as necessary, i.e. materials sourcing, group tour scheduling, sustainability, etc.
  • Help create and maintain outdoor seasonal displays for Halloween, the holidays and more.
  • Interact regularly with guests and visitors, answering questions and possibly providing tours.

Duties and Responsibilities

Gardeners maintain assigned areas or zones within the Village Center including cutting gardens, indoor and outdoor potted displays, greenhouses and materials storage areas. They have much creative autonomy with regard to design and plant selection yet also work as part of a team under management direction. He or she:

  • Performs a range of tasks important to the cultivation, preservation and protection of existing plants, including but not limited to soil preparation, planting, mulching, weeding, watering, fertilization and integrated pest management.
  • Communicates maintenance needs such as irrigation, hedge trimming, tree maintenance, etc. with the grounds crew.
  • Operates equipment and maintains general care of tools necessary for gardening work including golf carts, blowers, carts, and hand tools. Ensures that all applicable safety standards are followed.
  • Is neat and clean in appearance and wears at all times company-provided “Fearrington Gardens” attire.
  • Interacts with the public regularly, greeting and answering questions.

Education and Experience

He or she should:

  • Have an Associate or B.S. degree, preferably in Horticulture and/or related field, and a minimum of 3-4 years of hands-on, relevant horticulture work experience.
  • Possess strong knowledge of plant identification and landscape maintenance techniques; proficient in safely operating various landscaping tools and equipment.
  • Enjoy interacting and working in close proximity to the general public, sharing information on a wide range of subjects, from plant identification to location and hours of our businesses.
  • Be comfortable working outside, often in variable weather conditions.
  • Be able to perform heavy lifting, up to 60 lbs.
  • Have a valid driver’s license.
  • Behave with the highest integrity and communicate in a manner that fosters teamwork and cooperation within the department and company.
