The Belted Goat

To kick off the new decade, Fearrington is honored to be hosting our first Belted Goat wine dinner with John Wright of Sanctuary Vineyards. I have been following Sanctuary’s progress for years now, and time after time, I am beyond impressed with the prestige & quality of these wines. Still an underdog in this massive wine industry, I wanted to personally share these phenomenal, local wines with you.

You shop local. You eat local. But do you also drink local? North Carolina is home to many wonderful things, but until recently, had not been known for their wines. The Old North State has 5 different wine AVAs, or appellations, starting in the Piedmont, and moving westward to Appalachia. Meet the outlier – emphasis on the “out”. Sanctuary Vineyards is located in Jarvisburg — one of the farthest Eastern parts of mainland NC. If you’ve taken the northern driving route to the Outer Banks, you’ve likely passed through here! The Wright Family & ancestors have been in Currituck County for seven generations farming & tending vines. Hundreds of years ago, it was Muscadine. Now, it’s international grape varietals.

John has had a “right” time selecting and planting varietals that work well in the warmer & humid climate out by the sound, but has established some interesting grapes that feel right at home in the region. For example, you can find the world-famous grapes of the Bordeaux region, the infamous Albariño of Rias Baixas, the Italian warriors of Sangiovese & Aglianico, and lastly, Norton: America’s oldest, native grape. Stylistically, I think of their wines as the BBQ dilemma – either you’re a fan of the Western, tomato-based sauce, or you prefer the Eastern, vinegar-based stuff… you rarely enjoy both. In short, Sanctuary makes wines for both types of North Carolinian wine drinkers – those who grew up on Muscadine wine, & those who traveled around Europe, drinking Old-World wines. In my case, I’ve fallen for both of their styles.
